Girls fall to TMR, only men A salvage tie as seconds and thirds lose to Irish, but on bright side, MURRRRRAAAYYYY shows up to Sat. nite BBQ.
Five SABRFC teams hit the road to play some rugby last Saturday. The results may not have been what we had hoped for, but it was a full day of fun, hard rugby with some terrific highlights, again some of these perhaps not what we hoped for, but highlights nevertheless. The womens seconds played a strong game but came up short against TMR 2, 12-10. The womens firsts came up against some strong running in the Town forwards, and although Liz Vincente made some key tackles, the firsts came up short by a couple of tries.
Out in Ste-Julie, the Irish had five teams at home. The SAB thirds were hoping to reverse a defeat suffered earlier in the season. The game was close but the Irish took advantage of a few turnovers to win easily in the end. Still, Stone got to play against his nephew who was nearly crushed by Lester and Old School learned what it was like to run into an immovable object, especially when it is moving at you at high speed!
Nick Smith continues to improve at scrumhalf and another player showed great promise in the seconds. Matt played a sparkling game at fly half with the reserves, as did Jamie Brasseur. But our seconds ran out of steam and despite valiant play from Olney and Milligan, the Irish outscored us 7 tries to 4 (41-25) or thereabouts.
The first team game was a wonderful spectacle if you were watching from the shade of the clubhouse veranda. Much beer was consumed by the SABRFC fans and players that gathered there to watch. It was hot on the pitch however. The fans saw a match with 4 or five lead changes, the last of which came on the last play of the game with the Irish tying the score 19-19 on a penalty kick. Ste-annes had moved ahead only minutes earlier on a Yohan kick. The game featured three wonderful tries and a drop kick. There were exciting counters by both teams and the Ste-Annes try came off a beautiful dummy by Matty and good support play from Antonnechia and Bryce.
Ste-Annes did squander numerous try opportunities, one of which was a nice movement to the wing and then a run up the left side by Jazz, with Bryce following in support, but the play was called back for interference on the supporting player. The Irish also squandered many scoring chances and could easily have won.
All three games were well reffed, the seconds and thirds being officiated by Irish club referees who did admirable work under what is always difficult circumstances. After the match, Ste-annes lingered until the bus driver got impatient, as the hosting was top notch with cold beer and music specially organized for the Irish rookie night.
The bus went directly to Graham J's where the 3rd team fly half had organized a delicious BBQ after playing a full game. Old school helped with salad preparation and wine selection. There was a two-storey bong, which Stone promises will be in the next book. Even in defeat you can find something to lift the team. Today it was the appearance of Chris Murray who played on both the thirds and seconds sides and then showed up ready to rumble at the BBQ!
The party went late, very late, too late, but early next morning a full crew was still on hand at 830 am sharp to set the field up for the Saints Rugby Jamboree. It was a huge event. An event that would have been difficult to envisage 20 years ago. Over 300 players from 7 clubs and parents and supporters brought the crowd to over 500 (the most accurate stats are from the BBQ where 600 hot dogs were served!!). The sidelines looked like a tent city as every shelter was set up to provide some shade.
The games continued nonstop from 10 to 3 pm and there was rugby on every corner of every field at Ecole St George. Congratulations are in order to the Saints Team, including Andrea, Bill, Brenda, Marissa, Graham and others too numerous to mention. Many positive comments were received and an example from the many emails received Monday morning is this one from the Mont Tremblant club:
"On behalf of MTRFC, I would like to echo Keith's comments.
A great day was had by all; our players, parents and coaches returned to Mont-Tremblant very tired, but very happy.
Great job Saints.
Mark
MTRFC"
A reminder that another jamboree will be held on July 11 and much help will be needed, particularly for set up and cleanup. Stay tuned.
This week the women play the Barbs at home and the men one and two play at home against Beaconsfield. Try to get out to practice and spread the word to friends who want to play. The thirds travel to Qc city this weekend and will be seeking players to make this trip. Special effort will be appreciated and we will do what we can to rent a small bus to make the trip more pleasant if we can get enough players to fill it.
