Pretty Rugby - Angels & Saints

Submitted by Lee Bieber

To start a Sunday off with sunshine, Marty and Gill Florence... you'd think the day couldn't get better.  Well, it did.  The Angels (our U15 Girls team) took the field and played two fantastic games of 7s.  Lead by captain Erin Brown, the Angels kept possession of the ball, and played a very strong open style game.  The support by Bianca Grasso & Nicola Sibthorpe was amazing, and the tries scored were total team efforts.  Although the first game was lost to O'town 15-10 (our tries scored by Erin & Sam White) it was a HUGE improvement from the week before (losing 25-0 to a more organized group of Saracens).

Then, the Angels turned on the heat.  Their second game was played against Beaconsfield (who, by the way the week before, boasted a convincing win in their first U17 game against the Saints).  Beaconsfield had a young and inexperienced group today, but managed to put the ball over the line to score their first U15 try.  The Angels responded with a BOOM!  Scoring 6 tries and never looking back.  Brianna Ste-Marie lead some great attacks by the backs, and the game finished with two tries scored by Jackie Pearsall & Sam White each, while captain Erin and Savannah Leroux each scoring singles.

Does it get any better? Sure does!

The Saints Jr girls played 2 solid matches.  The first against Ormstown, started a bit slowly.  It seemed as though the girls were asleep.  No one was hitting rucks (even though that's all we worked on at practice last week).  But then something happened...something clicked.  Our girls started to play with some of the best skills seen so far this year... maintaining possession, hitting gaps, supporting the ball... it was pretty rugby.  The final score was 20-5 for the Saints.

Their second game was against CRQ who had won last week's game by squeaking in a try in the last five minutes.  Today, the Saints had a little score to settle.  The Beast was released... and her name is Kimm Carriere (scored the team's 4 tries).  Everyone worked hard, and regardless of the stinking heat, they never gave up.  Final score was 20-0.  I think a little swim in the pool, some water breaks, and some great team play contributed to some of the most fun rugby so far this year.

Keep it up girls!  You're playing Pretty Rugby!!!
