Four games at home and one in Quebec
On a hot and muggy Saturday the women's 2 team took the field early against the Irish 2. Our girls lost a close but continue to improve. The women's 2 continues to be a highlight to this 2010 rugby season. The women's one defeated the Barbarians. Few details on both these games were made available to this reporter but perhaps some will emerge over the week ahead. The men's two and one teams defeated their Beaconsfield counter parts. Bryce said he played well.
Meanwhile the thirds travelled to QC with a full squad of 22. They played an excellent game against a solid Quebec team on the Plains of Abraham. Despite some poor commitments in the rucks, solid running and tackling in the backs led to the team being up 17-5 in the closing minutes. The second yellow card of the game allowed Quebec to score twice to tie it up. The final points coming from the conversion from near the sideline. Such drama. For the second time this year the club was called on interference by a player following in support of a player running into the endzone. Players should know they are allowed to follow in support of a teammate running with the ball, but cannot deliberately interfere or block out a potential tackler. In this case the Quebec player "sold" the interference by running into the supporting player and kicking up a fuss "soccer style." At the time Guiler was clear into the endzone. Guiler had previously scored on a turnover.
Nick Smith ably captained the team and David Miles did a solid job filling in at flyhalf. Mark Scotland played well at second row and won all his lineout ball.
Belinsky took pictures.
A reminder that all this week is rep rugby week. The club turns over all profits to the players who have committed time and money this year to play for the provincial teams. Briana M., Suchie, Hayden, Spencer, VG, Nick Smith and others will appreciate your efforts to make it out to this week's events which include a bbq auction (10$ rib steak plate) on Tuesday, Poker on Wednesday, BBQ on Thursday and the concessions stands for the women's games on Saturday.
NOTE: There was a nice after game social at the field Saturday. Players and supporters are reminded that with school out the field has been cleaned up by J-Mac and should stay that way til September. This can only be accomplished if the 300 or so rugby players who use the shed each week make an effort not to litter beer caps and labels (what is with that anyways??), bits of tape and therapy gear, and apple cores (Bryce!) and banana peels on the ground or in the shed.
